Attendance

Attendance is taken very seriously at Wakefield High School. The staff and administration believe that there is a high correlation between attendance and achievement and that regular attendance is crucial to all students’ success. Wakefield High School will maintain accurate attendance information and will share this information with parents and students. It is extremely important for parents and students to closely monitor and document any school absences.

According to WCPSS Board Policy 6000.8, cumulative absences (excused or unexcused) above ten in a class are considered excessive and the student will receive a “FF” rather than the passing grade. Students who have more than 10 absences during a semester and receive an “FF” may appeal the failure to an “attendance committee” comprised of administrators and teachers. The decision of the committee is final, and appeals will not be accepted by the principal. We no longer offer validation.

Students will not be counted absent from school when participating in school-sponsored events or activities. To be counted present, students must be in school at least one half of the school day (2 blocks).

College Planning

Freshman will work with Student Services counselors in groups the week of November 13-17 to complete four year planning and career assessment on the College Foundation of North Carolina website (www.cfnc.org). We encourage parents to follow-up with their students to help them get off to a "fresh" start.

Opportunity Updates
  • Parent Volunteers Needed in the Media Center
The Media Center is working on inventory this month. We are in desperate need of about 20 volunteer hours (the # of volunteers doesn't matter) during the week of May 19-23, to put Media Center shelves in exact order (we call this shelf reading). Qualifications are minimum. Volunteers need to be able to read the spine label on books and arrange decimal numbers in order. Time is flexible, 7:30-3:30 any day Monday to Friday that week. People can come and go individually, or as a group. Shelf reading is tedious but gratifying for those of us who crave order. To sign up, please call the Media Center at 562-3638, or email Marilyn Bushey, mbushey@wcpss.net

  • Wakefield Wolverine Club Scholarship Award
Please click here to see more information on this scholarship.

  • ASVAB
The ASVAB aptitude test will be administered to interested juniors and seniors on Tuesday, April 22nd. Students may sign up in English or CTE classes, or in Student Services.

  • MTV is pilot casting a new show, Teen and Their Folks.
Teens 16-19 and their parents are invited to discuss attitudes toward relationships on MTV. To learn more about this opportunity, pick up information on the job board outside of student services.
