| 2009-02-17 | Winter Guard News | The first ever Winter Guard International Regional Championship to be held in North Carolina took place this past Saturday, February 14, at Broughton HS. The Wakefield Winter Guard program was represented well by its three teams that entered the event.
The Wakefield High School-Silver team performed in just its third ever regional championship event. Performing its production "The Shadow of the Raven" and competing in the Scholastic A division against the varsity teams from many other schools, the students performed well in prelims and earned a spot in finals by finishing in a three way tie for 9th. After a long day, the team stepped it up a notch in finals raising their score and gaining the 9th place for themselves alone. We were thrilled by the performances of the students on this, which is comprised primarily of freshman and first year performers.
The Wakefield High School-Maroon team enter the national stage for the first time since being promoted to Open Class after finishing 4th in the nation at the 2008 WGI World Championships. A somewhat nervous beginning to the prelims performance gave way to a strong ending and a 2nd place finish. The performance in finals - the best thus far this season - was rewarded with a higher score while maintaining 2nd place. Their score places them tied for 5th in the nation after the first two weeks of regional competitions. The Wakefield Independent team performing its production "Jekyll and Hyde" had very strong performances in both prelims and finals and earned 1st place in the Independent A classification in both. The team is comprised primarily of alumni from the Wakefield Winter Guard program. Their score in finals have them ranked 3rd nationally currently.
All three of these teams will join the team from Wakefield Middle and the Wakefield Percussion team at a local event on February 28 at Clayton HS. However, they will venture back on the national stage at the Winter Guard International New Jersey-Power Regional in South Brunswick on March 21. |

Making its Open Class debut after being promoted from A class at the 2008 WGI World Championships, the Wakefield HS Maroon team finished 2nd in the Scholastic Open division to the hosts from West Johnston HS by a slim 1.3 point margin.
