WHS PTSA Committee Descriptions
Academic Emphasis: The mission of this committee is to encourage, acknowledge, promote and honor academic endeavors for all students at Wakefield High School . This committee will seek to provide community support for continuing growth and achievement for all students. Volunteers are needed to assist the Academic Emphasis Chair in preparation and facilitation of the recognition programs during the school year .
Audit Committee: At least three individuals (not currently serving on the PTSA Executive Committee or able to sign checks) that will audit the books at the end of the fiscal year and at such times as required by the resignation of the Treasurer.
Awards: The Awards Committee collects and submits nominations from Wakefield HS to Wake County PTSA and NC PTSA in selected categories to compete for awards such as teacher of the year, principal of the year, or PTA council of the year. This is all completed in the spring of the year.
Budget: Responsible for developing a budget for the PTSA. The Budget is an outline that coordinates income & expenditures.
By-laws: By-laws are rules by which an organization is governed. This committee will maintain current approval by the State and will format/process all amendments to the bylaws. Bylaws are updated every three years or as necessary.
Career/Business Alliance: This committee works closely with the Career Technology staff and the Business Alliance of Wakefield High School.
Character Education/Citizenship: Responsible for Character Ed enhancement programs for students which promote the Character Traits program of Wake County . It is also responsible for promoting citizenship.
Cultural Arts: To encourage individuals of all ages to enjoy and participate in the arts. The committee will attend fairs conducted by the Arts Council and other such organizations in order to evaluate and contract with specific artists/performers. The committee will coordinate these programs with the Administration of Wakefield HS. English as Second Language (ESL): To encourage parents and students to get involved in assisting as tutors to WHS students participating in the ESL program. Foreign language skills are not necessary to volunteer in ESL, and time commitments can vary (weekly tutor sessions, open house events, student orientation, parent programs, etc.)
Festival of the Arts: This Committee will assist in the development and execution of the annual three-campus event held at WHS that showcases student talent in various art forms.
Graduation Reception: This committee will consist of junior parents only. They will arrange/ host the Senior Graduation Reception, following graduation exercises. This committee will send out letters to senior families in March, with all pertinent info relating to this event. Remember, when your child is a Senior, other Junior parents will be doing this for you.
Grant Writing: These individuals would assist the various committees in developing responses to requests for Grants that will benefit the students of Wakefield High School .
Grounds: Responsible for certain “grounds” projects, such as planting, maintenance, or possible construction.
Growth Management: Growth management will continue to be an issue within the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) for the foreseeable future. Our District Representative on the Wake County Board of Education is encouraging individual PTA/PTSA organizations to develop a Growth Management Subcommittee as a focal point for gathering and distributing information on growth management at their school. At this time the primary goal of the Growth Management Subcommittee of the Wakefield High PTSA is to develop a notification system for the dissemination of growth management information to Wakefield High parents, students, and other interested parties.
Historian: This position is responsible for developing and maintaining archives for the WHS PTSA of various events, recognition, publicity, and membership information throughout the school year.
Hospitality: The goal of this committee is to develop a feeling of friendliness among members of the PTSA, the faculty, administration and staff of Wakefield . This committee will cater quarterly Faculty Luncheons, Teacher Appreciation week, PTSA meetings, etc. Ongoing needs exist for parents willing to prepare home cooked foods for these events, in addition to assisting in setup and cleanup. Volunteers can assist on an ongoing basis or event basis, based on your availability.
Legislative Representative: Helps members understand their responsibilities as citizens in the democratic process and become knowledgeable about our government, how it functions and how they can become involved. This committee is nonpartisan political action based on PTA principles and issues; it supports or opposes legislation- not candidates or political parties.
Media Center: Individuals that would assist in the Media Center as needed in various administrative tasks.
Membership: To build an informed, active membership which is familiar with the mission, objectives, policies, and programs of the PTSA and how it affects local concerns.
Newsletter: Responsible for the collection of articles for the PTSA newsletter. It is responsible for its publication and distribution. Volunteers are needed to help label and sort the newsletter for mailing to parents.
Nominating: This committee will nominate a slate of officers for the coming year. It uses the membership list as well as information obtained from the feeder middle-school PTA presidents to contact potential nominees. The main thrust of its work occurs in February thru April of each year.
Project Graduation: This individual will work with WCPTA Council to publicize this event to graduating seniors at WHS and solicit WHS parent volunteer help for this annual event at Dorton Arena.
PTSA Board Nominations: Responsible for the identification and nomination of the officers of the WHS PTSA. Activities include indentifying potential officer candidates for positions via the membership and incoming Freshman parents, communicating job responsibilities and expectations to candidates, selecting qualified candidates for the positions, and presenting the slate of officers to the full WHS PTSA membership in April for approval.
Public Relations: Responsible for telling the PTA' s story to the public. It will notify newspapers of all PTSA award winners and other events held by the organization.
Reflections: The Reflections contest is a cultural arts program sponsored by the National PTA, which encourages students to express themselves through the creative arts. Students interpret each year's theme by creating entries in any of four categories: Visual Arts (painting, drawing, collage), Photography, Literature (creative writing-stories, poems) and Music (composition). The program is designed to encourage and recognize each student's individual creativity, and recognition is presented at the County, State, and National level.
Scholarships: Responsible for the dissemination of information regarding available PTSA Scholarships to Seniors and their parents. They coordinate the Scholarship judging panel and notify the students. The presentations are made at the annual Senior Assembly.
School Improvement Plan Committee Parent Liaisons: The purpose of the SIP Team is to facilitate the process of examining our data, identifying reasons for strengths and weaknesses, and coming up with plans (strategies) for improvement. The entire faculty is involved with the process, but the SIP committee Parent Liaisons provide leadership and assist in final compilation. The product of the committee's efforts is the School Improvement Plan written document to the Central Office. There are three basic components to the School Improvement Plan. 1. Student achievement across grade levels, abilities, demographic groups. 2. School climate and safety. 3. Community interaction. The Parent Liaisons to the SIP Committee are voted into their positions by the parent population at Wakefield High School .
Smaller Learning Communities Grant Advisory Committee: The goal of the WCPSS Smaller Learning Communities Grant Advisory Committee is to aid in the implementation of the $2.5m grant awarded to nine SLC high schools to create various strategies for the achievement of their goals. The SLC grant was obtained to put in place a new structure that would provide more flexibility for students in their core courses, to increase academic rigor while supporting further academic reform. Also, part of the grant will be used for the implementation of an advisory program and ninth grade transition academies. This will benefit the student through out various stages of their high school tenure. This committee will comprise of 3 to 4 individuals from each of the nine SLC grant schools representing the faculty, business liaison, and PTSA representatives.
Student Directory: This individual is responsible to coordinate and execute the annual publishing and distribution of the Student Directories that are purchased by student and parent members of the PTSA.
Teacher Appreciation Week: This individual will work closely with the Hospitality Committee and Volunteer Coordinator to plan and coordinate volunteers, events, and donations needed for the WHS Teachers, Counselors, Administration, Cafeteria Staff, Security Staff, Bus Drivers, etc. for recognition during this National PTA annual dedication in May.

Teacher Liaison: This individual represents the WHS Teachers as a Board member, and encourages fellow faculty and staff members to become members of the PTSA. They will also be the liaison with the faculty to determine needs of the staff.
Volunteers: This committee is a group of parent volunteers that assist the PTSA or Wakefield HS when an occasion arises due to: testing, general meeting, fundraising event, school volunteer needs, mentor, tutors, etc.
Wake Education Partnership : This organization is a not-for-profit organization which works in conjunction with parents, the school board and school district to disseminate information among all groups. They meet four times per year during which time various aspects of the Wake County Public schools are discussed.
Ways & Means: The primary mission of Ways & Means is to coordinate fundraising activities of the Wakefield HS PTSA. This may be accomplished through silent or live auctions, as well as passive fundraising options made available to the Wakefield HS community .
Web Site PTSA Help Liaison: This individual would be the focal point for the WHS PTSA as the link to the WHS Web Team to ensure PTSA information is posted timely and accurately.
